"How beautiful are your dwelling places, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, even faints, for the house of the Lord!"(Psalm 84:1-2)
This longing is not for a building or a physical place, but for God Himself, who fills His house with His presence. The heart of the believer knows that true life and true joy are found only in God. Therefore, worship is, above all, a longing for closeness to the Lord.
How beautiful it is to see the image of weak birds finding a safe haven with God, how much more so for God’s children who draw near to Him!
In His presence, we find stability and a place to place our burdened hearts and our troubles. Worship is a moment of inner stability in the shadow of His love.
“Blessed are those whose strength is in You, whose heart is in the ways of Your house” (v. 5). Life may be filled with difficulties, but those who make God their source of strength go from strength to strength. When the ways of the Lord are in our hearts, we become steadfast in the face of challenges. Frequent worship in God’s house renews our resolve and fills us with hope. “For a day in your courts is better than a thousand” (v. 10). What a privilege it is to stand even on the threshold of the Lord’s house, for this is greater than all the pleasures of the world. Dwelling in God’s presence is better than anywhere else, for there is true satisfaction and peace. Blessed is everyone who trusts in Him, for He is the safe refuge of every believer (v. 12).
Prayer
O Lord of hosts, how beautiful are your dwelling places! My heart longs to live in your presence every day.
Thank you for giving me security at your altars, just as the sparrow finds a home and the swallow a nest.
Make my strength in you alone, and plant the paths of your house in my heart so that I may go from strength to strength.
O Lord, I choose to stand on the threshold of your house more than all the world’s goods. Blessed is he who trusts in you.
